New(ish) stories online and in print

I haven’t posted in a while, so I thought I’d post some links to recent online and magazine pieces. Holdfast magazine Issue #5 (Of Land, Sea and Sky) came out at the end of February, and features my story ‘Shadow Cooking’, with some lovely artwork by Zoe Ann Lee. It’s available to read here:

The other stories in this issue are a wonderful speculative blend; taking in sci-fi, fantasy, horror and surreal. There is intricate world-building, giant squids, planets ruined by drought and plenty more to fire the imagination. They are all worth checking out, and if you’ve a mind to submit, Holdfast are looking for submissions for Issue 6 on the theme of ‘Gods and Monsters’ (or religion and politics) until May 15th. See their submissions page for further details.

Secondly Fur-Lined Ghettos magazine has included two of my stories – ‘Spit Out the Bugs in Your Mouth’ and ‘Shredding’ – in their Issue 6. It’s a lovely print mag, and is available to order for just Β£4 (UK) here:

Fur-Lined Ghettos lean more into the surreal/experimental bracket, and if your writing is somewhere in that spectrum, it’s again worth looking at submitting to Issue 7. They’ll be open for submissions shortly.

A couple of final free story links – an older story of mine, ‘The Waiting Room’, is in Issue 7 of Don’t Do It Magazine – Good Worlds/Bad Worlds, here:

And ‘Artipeeps‘ creative blog has a weekend showcase featuring (a slightly re-written version of) my story ‘It is All Little Marbles in Our Ears’.

Artipeeps are constantly looking for new writers and artists for both weekend showcases and collaborations, so again worthwhile getting in touch with.

I’d sign this post off properly, but it’s taken me over an hour to write as WordPress keeps crashing every time I upload a photo… a battle which has left me physically and emotionally drained. Hope you can have a look at the online stories, and consider submitting if the magazines look like they would be a good fit for your own pieces. πŸ™‚

  1. I absolutely loved ‘Shadow Cooking’ – I think it’s the best piece of yours I’ve read. I was utterly hooked from the first line. And the illustration is perfect.
Your writing goes from strength to strength. Here’s hoping you get more of the exposure and success you deserve.

  2. Thank you Stephen, for mentioning ArtiPeeps. It was a real pleasure to have you and your work on the site. Your Marbles piece keeps the reader on their toes. Thank you! Nicky. πŸ™‚

  3. You just keep getting better and better, Stephen. Your distinct “voice” shines in your work. You are one fine writer, with years ahead of you to create and grow even more. Please don’t ever stop.

Thankyou for reading, feedback/constructive criticism always welcome :-)
